Terms of Use
These terms are an agreement between you and CloutOps LLC ("we"), which makes Protag. They cover the Protag apps, the website and Protag+. By using Protag you agree to them and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Protag.
Stories and replies
Protag is interactive fiction. Replies are generated by AI and can be inaccurate, inconsistent or unexpected, so don't rely on them as fact or advice. Stories about real people are fiction and do not describe their real lives. Characters and worlds from books, shows, games and music belong to their owners, and Protag isn't affiliated with or endorsed by them.
Community rules
We have zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. No sexual content, and no romance involving anyone under 18. No sexual content about real people, and no invented crimes or scandals about them. No hate, harassment, threats or sharing someone's personal information. No spam or scams.
Posts are screened before they go public, and anyone can report or block. Moderators review reports within 24 hours, remove content that breaks these rules, and suspend or ban the accounts that posted it.
Your account
You must be at least 13 to use Protag, and readers under 18 get stories kept suitable for their age. You can use Protag as a guest; signing in with your phone number keeps your account across devices, and guests get a limited number of messages before signing in. One account per person. Keep your sign-in codes to yourself: you're responsible for what happens on your account. You can delete your account at any time.
What you write
The stories, messages, comments and images you post are yours. So that we can run Protag, you give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, copy, adapt (for example, resize an image), display and distribute them: that covers showing what you publish to other readers, and sending what you write in a chat to our AI provider to write the replies. The license ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from short-lived backups and copies other readers already made of things you published.
Only post what you have the right to share. You can use the replies written in your chats, but similar replies may be written for other readers. We can remove anything that breaks these terms.
Things you can't do
Don't use Protag to break the law. Don't get around message limits, age checks, blocks or moderation; don't use bots or scrapers; don't copy, modify or reverse-engineer the apps; and don't use Protag or its replies to build a competing service or to train AI models.
Copyright complaints
If something on Protag infringes your copyright, contact us at the address below with a link to it, a description of your work, and how to reach you. We remove infringing content and close the accounts of repeat infringers.
Protag+
Protag+ is an auto-renewing subscription, billed weekly or monthly at the price shown before you buy. There is no free trial: you're charged when you subscribe, then at the start of each new week or month until you cancel. Protag+ belongs to your Protag account, so it works on the web and in the app wherever you're signed in. If the price changes, we'll tell you before the new price applies.
In the app, Protag+ is billed through the App Store or Google Play. It renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; manage or cancel it in your store account settings. Refunds follow the store's policies. Purchases on iOS are also subject to Apple's Standard End User License Agreement (see If you got Protag from the App Store).
On the web, Protag+ is billed to your card by Stripe. Cancel anytime from the Protag+ page (Manage subscription): you keep Protag+ until the end of the period you've paid for, and you won't be charged again. Deleting your account cancels a web subscription straight away. If you were charged by mistake, contact support and we'll make it right.
Free messages
Free accounts include a daily allowance of messages that resets at midnight in your time zone, and a few more that come back one at a time after the allowance runs out. New accounts get a larger allowance for their first days. Limits may change. Inviting a friend can reset your limit.
If you got Protag from the App Store
Your use of the Protag app is also governed by Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement (the "Standard EULA"). Where it and these terms differ about your license to use the app, the Standard EULA applies. In addition:
- These terms are between you and CloutOps LLC only, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for the app and its content.
- We give you a limited, non-transferable license to use the app on Apple-branded products you own or control, as the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions allow. Other accounts associated with yours through Family Sharing or volume purchasing may use it too.
- We alone provide maintenance and support for the app. Apple has no obligation to provide any.
- If the app fails to conform to any warranty that applies, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid for the app, if any. To the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app, and any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses from a failure to conform to a warranty are our responsibility.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims by you or anyone else relating to the app or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws.
- If anyone claims that the app, or your possession or use of it, infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- You confirm that you aren't located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo, or one the U.S. Government has designated as "terrorist supporting", and that you aren't on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the app, such as your mobile data plan's.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Once you accept them, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
- Send any questions, complaints or claims about the app to us, at the address below.
If you got the app from Google Play, Google Play's terms also apply to the app and to purchases made through it.
Ending your use
You can stop using Protag and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms or puts others at risk, and we may change, pause or stop parts of Protag. The sections on what you write, disclaimers, liability and disputes still apply after your account is closed.
Disclaimers
Protag is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement, and we don't promise that Protag will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that replies will be accurate.
Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost data, profits or revenue. Our total liability for any claim about Protag is limited to the greater of what you paid us for Protag+ in the 12 months before the claim and US$50. If someone brings a claim against us because of content you posted or your breaking these terms, you'll cover the reasonable costs that result, to the extent the law allows. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top, and tell you in the app before a significant change takes effect. If you keep using Protag after that, the new terms apply; if you don't agree, you can stop using Protag and delete your account.
Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, and disputes go to the state or federal courts in Wyoming. If you live in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you keep the protections of the laws where you live and can bring claims in your local courts.
