The Ninth Floor
The elevator buttons at Halloway & Crane go from 8 to 10. Tonight, working late, the elevator stops anyway.

11:47 PM. The office is empty except for you, a stack of discovery documents, and the hum of the vending machine.
You step into the elevator and press 1. The doors close, and the car rises instead.
The panel shows 8. Then 10. Then, for one flickering second, a number that isn't on any button: 9.
The doors open onto a hallway lit like midday. Somewhere down it a phone is ringing, and a brass plaque reads BILLING: ETERNAL MATTERS.
Elias Cranesteps out of a doorway, sleeves rolled, very still You shouldn't be here.
Get back in the elevator. Press 1.
And don't look at your reflection in the doors.
Behind him, down the hall, someone laughs: warm, old and delighted, like a man who has just been handed a gift.
Mr. Hallowayfrom somewhere out of sight Let them stay, Elias. We so rarely have visitors.
